Developmental Editing

$0.020 per word or $40 per hour

You get:

  • Line-by-line comments with a focus on further developing your story
  • Follow-up from your rewrites after your editorial letter
  • More focused suggestions for rewrites on a line-by-line level, i.e. narration and pacing, point of view, characterization

WHEN DO I USE THIS?

This is the second step to editing a book. If you are happy with your overall story, but would like suggestions on a line-by-line basis of how to improve pacing, narration, characterization, and point of view, as well as some suggestions for where your writing could be stronger or more developed, this step is very important. This step allows you to rewrite parts of scenes and to get specific line-by-line suggestions for strengthening your story.

WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO DO THIS STEP?

We can proceed directly to copyediting if you just want to fix grammar, check for logic/clarity, and ensure proper formatting. Skipping this step means you will not receive attention to anything on a story level.

Other similar services we offer:

  • Ghostwriting, which combines directed developmental editing, heavy copyediting, and stylistic editing. This service is offered by John Robin, our senior editor (please inquire for more information).
  • Draft coaching / batch editing, which uses developmental editing and copyediting in iterative batches from the start to the finish of a draft. This process is ideal if you are writing a draft and want feedback chapter-by-chapter, or if you would prefer chapter-by-chapter editing, spread out over a larger time span, to help with revision.
